Nutrition and GLP-1’s

Nutrition Fundamentals for Your GLP-1 Journey

I am incredibly excited to share my experiences collaborating with amazing nutrition experts like Steph Skeba, a remarkable registered dietitian, personal trainer, and CrossFit coach. This blog shares the essential principles of nutrition based on my experiences collaborating with these experts. This information is especially for those using GLP-1 medications but also those working on a non medical weight loss journey. Whether you're just starting your weight loss journey with these medications or exploring other paths, I’m here to provide you with thoughtful insights and guidance to help you navigate the sometimes overwhelming world of food choices!

Nutrition can be extremely multifaceted. A lot of our confusion comes from the flood of information out there, including advice from “Instagram experts” who often share contradictory takes. Our bodies also change over time due to various factors like hormonal shifts, aging, and lifestyle choices, making the one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition impractical. What works for one person might not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay! We must acknowledge that everyone’s nutritional needs depend on unique factors including hormone levels, physical activity, and personal lifestyles. Plus, scientific studies typically highlight correlations rather than definitive causes, adding yet another layer of confusion for my patients.

So, what should we focus on when considering our nutritional strategies? I want to emphasize four vital pillars: Quality, Quantity, Diversity, and Timing. Nutrition isn't just about what we eat; it’s how much we eat, the variety of foods we enjoy, and when we eat them! Instead of attempting an overwhelming overhaul of your diet all at once, I encourage you to embrace small, sustainable changes. Imagine striving for just a “1% better” every day—this small shift can lead to significant improvements over time!

My goal is to offer accessible advice that you can easily apply, no complex math required! Remember, your body is a intricate system, not just a simple math equation. Two common areas of concern that deserve our attention are sugar and processed foods. Sugar often finds its way into our diets in sneaky ways, and misleading food labels can make avoiding it even more difficult. A great first step is to prioritize whole, unprocessed foods—think items you might “grow, hunt, or pick.” By making a habit of reading food labels, you can empower yourself to make informed choices that positively impact your health.

Now let’s talk about the vital role of dietary fiber! It’s essential to understand that adequate fiber intake is crucial for converting white fat to brown fat effectively—this means relying on real food sources instead of fiber supplements. When it comes to fiber, whole fruits and vegetables are always the best choices. Also, taking your time to chew your food thoroughly, instead of quickly consuming it in liquid form, can enhance both digestion and satisfaction.

Now, let's talk about healthy fats! It’s time to dispel some myths that linger from the low-fat era. Healthy fats are essential for good brain function and hormone balance. Whole eggs, especially including the yolks, are nutrition powerhouses with essential vitamins and nutrients, which can be especially beneficial for women experiencing perimenopause.

Ultimately, the most important takeaway from all this is that nutrition is not about chasing quick fixes or obsessively counting macros to achieve perfection. It’s about embracing patience, consistency, and making informed choices in your journey to wellness. With that said I want you to “Pick Your Hard”. While meal prep might fee “hard”, getting a preventable disease will be much “harder” in the long run. Meal prep is a much healthier—and far more rewarding—alternative to living with preventable diseases and negative health outcomes. I encourage you to equip yourself with the right knowledge, focus on whole, real foods, and seek guidance from qualified experts rather than relying solely on popular trends online.
