Muscle Matters: The Missing Piece of Successful GLP-1 Weight Loss
Why Preserving Muscle Matters More Than the Number on the Scale While Taking GLP-1 Medications
If you've embarked on a journey with a GLP-1 weight loss medication like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, or Zepbound®, you've likely noticed a welcome shift on the scale! For the first time in your adult life, something is really working. Does this sound familiar? While this progress is fantastic, it's crucial to remember that weight loss is just one piece of a broader puzzle.
I don't write this to make you feel discouraged, because any weight loss is great, especially when you have struggled for years. Now that you have started to see the scale move, I want you to start asking bigger questions, like What Exactly is Being Lost?
True success in weight loss revolves around achieving not just a lighter body but also a healthier, stronger one that enriches your life in the long run! This perspective also helps you keep the fat off. We call this sustainable weight loss, and it is a very important part of the journey. Most of us don't just want to lose weight, but we also want to keep it off.
Understanding Weight Loss vs. Fat Loss
It's essential to recognize that the scale doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle, water, or bone. Rapid weight reduction can lead to the unfortunate consequence of losing precious lean muscle alongside body fat. This is significant because muscle plays a vital role in keeping your metabolism revved up, which you are going to need once you've lost all the weight that you want to. The good news is that GLP-1's allow you to lose body fat and build muscle at the same time, which promotes long-term health by enhancing:
- Metabolism
- Balance and mobility
- Bone strength
- Blood sugar regulation
- Overall energy levels
- Healthy aging
- Independence as you grow older
Ultimately, our goal should not be merely about losing weight but rather losing fat while safeguarding our muscle mass.
GLP-1 Medications and Muscle Preservation
GLP-1 medications can suppress appetite, enabling many people to eat less. While this can accelerate weight loss, it may also introduce challenges, especially if proper nutrition isn't prioritized.
The simple truth is that many individuals using GLP-1 medications struggle to eat enough and especially eat complete meals. A complete meal consists of a source of protein, carbohydrate, and a healthy fat, all 3 at once, in the same meal. So first of all, it is important to focus on balanced nutrition and not simply snack to survive.
You will also want to incorporate some form of exercise. Nothing complex; start by walking for 30 minutes after your largest meal, holding onto 5-pound weights. Once that becomes too easy for you, then jump on YouTube and follow a simple exercise video holding those 5-pound weights. If you don't have weights, no problem; find a body weight exercise video. There are lots of those on YouTube.
Here are Four Key Strategies to Protect Your Muscle
1. Eat to Build Muscle
You will want to eat 3 or 4 meals per day, and in addition to your high-fiber fruits and vegetables, it is really important to add protein to each of those meals. Protein is anything that runs, swims, flies, or eggs. You are aiming to include high-quality protein in every meal, because it gives your body the building blocks it needs to maintain and build muscle while shedding fat. Excellent sources of protein include:
- Chicken
- Fish
- Eggs
- Greek yogurt
- Cottage cheese
- Lean beef
- Tofu
Be sure to consult with your GLP-1 Coach or Doctor if you need guidance on what the right amount of protein is for your specific goals.
2. Embrace Strength Training
No need to become a bodybuilder; just two to four sessions of strength training per week can communicate an important message to your body: "Preserve this muscle!" I want you to understand you do not need to join a gym or go anywhere that makes you uncomfortable. There are plenty of opportunities to work out where you feel comfortable. Resistance training can be accomplished with:
- Dumbbells
- Resistance bands
- Gym machines
- Bodyweight exercises
You'll be amazed at how much even beginners can gain from consistent strength training.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Staying hydrated is fundamental for nearly every bodily function. Proper water intake supports:
- Muscle performance
- Recovery
- Energy levels
- Digestion
- Appetite regulation
Many underestimate how dehydration can contribute to fatigue, especially when using GLP-1 medications. So I want you to drink 4 times the amount of water tomorrow than you drank today and work your way up to 3 liters per day.
4. Look Beyond the Scale
While the scale gives us some insight, it tells only part of the story. Whenever possible, focus on tracking body composition instead of just your weight. Body composition assessments can guide you in monitoring:
- Body fat percentage
- Lean muscle mass
- Visceral fat
- Hydration status
- Metabolic changes
Observing these trends can provide you with a clearer picture of your overall health journey. Visit Evolt.Health to find a body composition scanner near you.
Prioritizing Healthspan Over Lifespan
One of my favorite ideas is the distinction between lifespan and healthspan. Lifespan is how long we live, while healthspan reflects how well we live during those years. Our goal should be not just to extend our years but to enrich them.
Preserving muscle is vital for maintaining an active, independent, and healthy lifestyle as we age.
GLP-1 Medications: Tools for a Healthier Future
GLP-1 medications have truly revolutionized obesity treatment, benefiting millions by improving their health. However, it's important to recognize that medication is only one part of the equation. For lasting success, it's essential to blend:
- Quality nutrition
- Strength training
- Hydration
- Adequate sleep
- Stress management
- Ongoing learning
- Consistent support
When these healthy habits become part of your everyday life, you're setting yourself up to maintain your results long after your medication regimen changes.
Final Thoughts
I often remind others that muscle is your currency for a long and healthy life. While I understand wanting to chase a lower number on the scale, and yes, that is so rewarding, I want you to also think about preserving muscle. So while you see the numbers on the scale drop, I want you also to ask yourself, Am I Getting Stronger? I want that answer to be yes. I also want you to look at yourself in the mirror and look at all the positive changes that you love. This will help you cultivate habits that foster a vibrant future.
This is the key to transforming weight loss into lasting wellness!
